ON her way home, Rosi thought about asking Uncle Richard to invite the man out to The Castle to measure for ghosts. Was that the word?
Uncle Richard, though, was not at dinner.
Rosiâs food was waiting when she entered the dining room. She thought the cook must be a genius, as she ate the tortellini with cheese.
Patting her stomach in anticipation of the two-hundred crunches that would precede bed, Rosi regretted not for the first time that she could not abide espresso. She made her way to her rooms, tossed some cocoa into the microwave, and began her nightly ritual of setting the clocks.
One of the many odd things about this Castle she was living in was the absence of clocks.
Perhaps she should think of it as the lack of visibility of any clocks. There were evidently clocks in the house. They chimed, bonged, gonged, rang, cuckooed, played, sang, chirped, cheered, and otherwise made whatever noises clocks were supposed to make with a fair amount of frequency, but without anything resembling regularity.
Rosi, being a modern girl, had all sorts of clocks. Her computer had a clock. Her laptop had a clock. Her tablet had a clock. Her video recorder had a clock. So did her movie player, digital music player, cellphone, television, and microwave. She counted once and found that she had about fifteen clocks as part of various gadgets or doohickeys spread about her suite.
She also had a clock and a watch.
Of course, back in the city, she would simply have turned whatever it was on, and the object would have reached out into the ether and found the time.
Here, with an absence of any regular connection to the twenty-first century, Rosi had to learn how to set the clocks.
Setting the various clocks took about twenty minutes. She rarely set every clock. She tried to get the main ones. She tried to get the ones that flashed at her or that she couldnât shove in a drawer. That took a little less time.
Of course, by the time she woke up, they were all set at different times. They were not a minute or two apart. They were hours, even days apart. One morning she had awakened to find her digital video recorder showing three weeks in advance with all of her scheduled shows already recorded.
Rosi was not about to watch them to see if it really had.
The only clocks that seemed to keep time were her cheap digital watch, the one her father had bought her at the dive shop before her first scuba lesson, and the small wind up travel clock, which boasted the loudest alarm. This clock kept time perfectly, but only until the alarm went off.
Thank you for this watch Daddy, Rosi thought, grateful that it kept time in this odd place.
Whenever she went into town, Rosi made sure her watch was right by checking the clock on the Alban Savings and Loans, the only bank in town.
Before she went to sleep that night, she took a look at Widowsâ Island through her telescope.
